U.S. and U.K. add Semi-Auto 7.62 Rifles to their Inventories

The United States and the United Kingdom have both recently announced their decisions to add a semi-auto 7.62x51 (308 Winchester) to their inventories.

The U.K. has chosen the Lewis Machine and Tool's .308 Modular Weapon System, dubbing it the 'Sharpshooter'.  It utilizes a monolithic rail platform (MRP) and the Stoner gas impingement design with a 16" barrel.

The U.S. (US SOCOM) has recently announced that they will start fielding FNH USA's MK 20 SSR.  This is a variant of the SCAR MK 17.  It has a gas operated short-stroke piston design behind a 20" barrel.

Both of these rifles are being introduced to fill a niche that has been dominated by either bolt guns or semi-auto rifles that shoot a smaller cartridge.  Now you know and knowing is half the battle...
