Ruger Announces SR22 and The American Rifle

Ruger is continuing their seemingly nonstop roll out of new products onto the firearms landscape. Introducing the Ruger American Rifle and the SR22 Pistol.

First off I have to agree with Ebbs over at Haus of Guns for noticing how much Ruger's New Rifle looks extremely similar to the Savage Axis. Why did Ruger make their new rifle so similar in appearance to the Axis? I have no idea, but it appears that Ruger has built-in more premium features into their rifle:
  • Ruger Marksman Adjustable Trigger (3-5lbs.)
  • Steel Bedded Receiver
  • Free Floated Cold-Hammer Forged Barrel
  • 243WIN, 308WIN, 270WIN, 30-06SPRG
The American Rifle utilizes a detachable four round rotary magazine and features a two position tang safety. The synthetic stock is fitted with a generous recoil pad and the pistol grip cap is graced by the a red Ruger eagle.

Ruger SR22

With the introduction of the SR22 Ruger deviates from their MKI/II/III line of automatic .22LR pistols to create what many are calling another Walther P22. Once again Ebbs said it first and in better fashion than I could anyways:
"I may sound a little aggressive and accusatory here, but I feel like we’re seeing a trend. The Ruger LCP (shades of the Keltec P3AT, released first), the new SR22 pistol (Walther P22) and now the New American Rifle (Savage Axis). Am I crazy?"
No Ebbs, you're not crazy; just too well informed. Let's hope the SR22 fairs better to my own standards than the P22 did. (That's a story for another time)
  • Two Different Grip Sizes and Magazine Base Plates
  • Ambidextrous Magazine Release and Decocker/Manual Safety
  • Picitinny Rail
I don't have much to say about the SR22 other than I'm not to crazy about it's safety. I like the fact Ruger has mounted it on the frame instead of on the slide, but pushing it up to deactivate? The rest of their SR line have manual safeties that deactivate by pushing them down; why the deviation?
